Local anesthesia with alkalinised
lidocaine previous to cardiac catheterization. |
| Abstract |
The subcutaneous infiltration of a local
anaesthetic, previous to cardiac catheterization is perceived as unpleasant by most of the
patients. Local anaesthetics may be painful when (intra-dermally) or subcutaneously
injected, due to mechanisms which are related to PH, liposolubility and the presence of
additives or preservers in the preparation. In our place of work, we alkalinise the PH of
the standard solution of lidocaine (PH=4-6) with the association of bicarbonate
(PH=7,2-7,6) with the aim of reaching a decrease of the painful feeling and we evaluate
and compare the results in two different groups of pacients submitted to a first diagnosis
of cardiac catheterism. |

| Title |
Analysis of the international literature about nursing in
cardiology between 1990 and 1999. |
| Abstract |
The documents published about nursing in
cardiology which are collected in the Medline files between 1990 and 1999 are analysed.
The following topics are observed: distribution for years, countries, languages, types of
documents, topics treated and journals in which the studies are published. At the same
time the different institutions, productivity and the rate of colaboration of authors are
analysed. We conclude that nursing in cardiology is still a young discipline: the volume
of registered records is still small, despite the length of period covered, although we
can observe that there is a rising tendency. We do not find many specialised magazines on
this theme, the proportion of revision is lesser than in other areas and the colaboration
rate among authors is also lower. In general the scientific documentation in cardiologic
nursing follows the same steps as medical literature in general: research is carried out
in hospitals and universities, there is a dominance English language as the medium of
spread of results and the journals in which works are published follow the Bradford
distribution. |

Visits in the Centre of Coronary Care: Opinion of all persons
implied. |
| Abstract |
The aim of this study is to know the
opinions of the patient, relatives and health professionals (doctors and nurses in the
centre) in relation to the rules and visit timetables of relatives to patients admitted in
the Coronary Unit (CCU) of the CSUB. This is a descriptive cross-sectonial study.
The survey included 109 patients, 99 visitors, 38 nurses and 17 doctors (total:
269). Data were collected through a questionnaire made by the researchers. Results
were measured by an instrument adapted to our environment; the questionnaire was made up
of two different parts: the first part consisted of 20 items which were grouped in 3
categories (rules, environment/atmosphere and positive and negative aspects of the
visits). In the second part, consisting of 5 items, the preferences of the interviewed
people in relation to timetables and rules were reflected. The research was carried out
between February and May 1996. Most of the interviewed people (88%) said that they
are beneficial and that the negative aspects represented are scarce. 56% would agree with
a more flexible timetable. As to the measure of isolation required to visitors in order to
access the patient rooms, more than 80% of patients and visitors said that this is a most
convenient measure and 85% of the total agree with the fact that the health staff should
restrict visits whenever it is considered to be necessary. |

Self-Evaluation in de layout of Electrocardiograms. |
| Abstract |
As nurses in the Coronary Unit, we are
conscious that Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a routine procedure in our working area and
being the nurse the ultimate responsible for the quality of the ECG, the following
questions are posed:
What do we understand by a correct register?
What do we have to do in order to achieve this?
After revising the bibliography and in the absence of valid quality rules which may define
the quality of electrocardiographic registers, we decided to elaborate some criteria which
might serve as a basis to compare the obtained registers. Without any doubt, nursers need
to know what we do, what means we use and what results are obtained. With procedure, we
shall be able to detect deficiencies and determine the corrective measures. |
