Early ambulation after cardiac catheterization. |
Abstract |
In the history of the heart catheterization, the main complications have been cardiac complications and vascular ones. The cardiac complications are practically solved. The preoccupation for vascular complications derived from percutaneous arterial puncture. This preoccupation has caused that traditionally was indicated a prolonged rest in bed in order to avoid the appearance of hemorrhage and thrombosis in the punctured extremity. Nevertheless, there is no reason that supports prolonged immobilization. The new technical developments (catheters of smaller caliber and greater biocompatibility, explorations less prolonged, less harmful introductory devices and contrasts) can shorten the period of immobilization after heart catheterization. The objective of this study is to initiate a protocol of early ambulation without the increase the arterial complications. The protocol procedure of the nursing care allows to prevent vascular complications and to improve the quality of the care. The mobilization seven hours after catheterization is as safe as traditional twenty-four hours ambulation. The early ambulation improves the comfort of the patients, reduces the annoyances of the prolonged resting in bed and reduces costs. |
