Abstract

Since it is known that the physiopathological mechanism of the acute myocardial infarction is the thrombotic occlusion of the coronary arteries, the treatment of the acute myocardial infarction has experienced significant changes.  At the present time, the patients with acute myocardial infarction are classified in patients of high risk and patients of low risk.  Platelet antiaggregants (Reopro) are also used before angioplasty when there is a lot of thrombotic content, or after angioplasty when good flow is not obtained.  The optimization of the angiographic results with stent allows to reduce occlusion and restenosis. Both techniques have demonstrated their utility to reduce the rate of early ischemic complications derived of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA).  The coronary stent can be a good option in the acute myocardial infarction to obtain a maxim luminar expansion and an effective reperfussion in selected patients, instead the use of powerful platelet antiaggregatory agents (as Reopro) can be effective and safe in the long term for the reduction of the stent thrombosis and the maintenance of vascular permeability.  Both techniques demand specialized nursing care and a well educated nursing staff.
