Abstract

Introduction. The admittance of a patient to the Coronary Unit may cause an inevitable emotional shock which might trigger a stressful situation. This protocol answers the need of coping with this situation.
Aim. To soothe the negative effects that fear, anxiety and stress may cause in the patient and their family on entering the unit, to set up some criteria and an assisting policy for a self-contained nursing staff, which guarantees a qualified assistance to improve staff’s quali- fication and satisfaction.
Material and methods. 1.- Descriptive survey. There were 562 incoming patients involved from September 2001 to November 2002. 2.- Anonymous questionnaires. 3.- Software. 4.- Bibliography.
Results. A significant reduction in all the variables generating stress when patients are admitted to our unit is observed when applying protocol. It must be highlighted a decrease of 57% in the patients’ insecurity, and a decrease of 34.2% in their discomfort. Reductions of very high and high stress are of 40% and 33.3 % respectively.  Fear is the variable with less reduction (19.1%), probably it is due to negative connotations associated to words like heart attack, coronary catheterization, etc. This issue was tested during the admission through a sanitary education program.
Conclusions. By introducing the protocol we have lessened the emotional impact that entering the Coronary Unit causes on the patient and their family. It also brought about a quiet nice atmosphere and both security and self-confidence in the performance of the nursing professionals.
