Patients (with ischemic cardiopathy) perception after two years since their first coronary episode.

Abstract

Introduction. Through a variety of studies it has been proven that information is not enough to achieve a change in behaviour. It is necessary to know the perception of their illness the patients have and what barriers they anticipate in order to make the change.
Objective. To identify risk factors which have proven more difficult to modify and the changes of perception two years after the first coronary episode.
Material and methods. Longitudinal-transversal study comparing discharge from hospital after first IC event and two years later. The first sample was obtained from patients in four hospitals in Catalonia during the study period. Criteria for inclusion were patients under 80 years of age with no previous ischemic cardiopathy history and no sensoperceptive alteration. All were given a questionnaire of 94 points. After two years the same patients were located and asked to complete a questionnaire of 54 points. Those patients who could not be located after three attempts to contact them by phone were discarded, thus reducing the number of patients to 39. For data analysis computer program spss version 10.05 was used.
Results. 39 patients, 29 men and 10 women. Average age 56,8. 76% AMI and 24% angina. Of the 35.6% who had smoked, 8% still smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day. 67% have given up smoking. 100% consider tobacco a risk. 27% consider their diet incorrect as opposed to a previous 7%. 32% consider alcohol consumption to be a risk factor. 54% high blood pressure. 71% are satisfied with their lifestyle compared to a previous 77%. 93% did some physical exercise whereas in the first survey it was 78%. 64% believe the most difficult change has been dietary.
Conclusions. On a short-term basis the patients feel responsible enough to be able to look after themselves but in the long term they find their preventive behaviour, especially sticking to a suitable diet, difficult to keep.  The aim of health education tries to foment healthy attitudes and behaviour and apply them to every day life. This cannot be achieved through sporadic activities but through the planning of continuous ones that allows maintaining these new acquired attitudes.
