Perception of stress management strategies in patients charged in coronary units.

Abstract

Introduction: In spite of recent medical advances, cardiovascular diseases remain the main health problem in most developed countries. Nurses must be able to identify efficient stress management responses within an early Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme.
Objectives: To describe stress management strategies expressed or verbalized by patients charged in coronary units and to outline nurses’ perception of the strategies used by their patients, as well as the concordance of this perception with patients’ manifestations.
Method: Descriptive qualitative study by means of deep interview carried out at the Coronary Unit of the Complexo Hospitalario de Ourense. A discourse analysis was performed in order to describe the meanings informants gave to their expressions and the interactions among them.
Results: The present study includes data from 10 men and 4 women, aged between 38 and 80. Four main categories were obtained: pain perception, experience of the disease, information received, and stress management strategies. The information received by the patient is limited and their understanding of it is deficient. Eleven sub-categories were identified in patients’ stress management responses. There is no concordance between nurses' and patients' stress perception.
Conclusions: Nurses can easily recognize stress patients' management strategies from their own words, and they must assume an important role in the information provided to patients.
