Abstract |
Currently, the automatic implantable defibrillator (AID) is the best treatment for patients with malignant ventricular arrhythmias. The impact of this device in the field of the arrhythmias that cause cardiac sudden death, together with diverse treatments, presents a double interest, because, besides representing an effective means of therapeutics, this device produces important modifications in the use of sanitary services, consequently the improvement of this treatment interests not only the professionals of the hospital staff and the primary attention staff, but also the sanitary authorities because of the investment of resources destined to such aim. Although the studies of morbidity and mortality have demonstrated the success achieved, there are no enough investigations on the needs of the AID carriers when they have to live with the device. The technological sophistication, the easiness of insertion, the acceptance of the therapy, the decrease of adverse effects of some antiarrhythmic drugs and the increase of the survival index, make consider other aspects like the quality of life related to health, including the functional, psychological and social state, as well as the indirect effects of the treatment, the mental support and its relation with the environment. The life quality (LC) is a personal concept, a vital attitude, relative to personal and familiar beliefs, that does not always agree with the estimations made by doctors. Therefore the importance of the revision of this subject; on the one hand as a reflection about how much we still need to do and, on the other what can be transferred to people with alterations of health in order to improve their LC. |
