Abstract

Objective: Keeping up and/or adopting good-for-the-heart habits, by patients who were given health education about coronary artery disease during their stay at our hospital.
Methodology: Transverse and descriptive study. Including patients with coronary artery disease who were given health education and who were admitted to the cardiology unit in our hospital from 6st February of 2004 to 10th December of 2004. We studied 6 main variables (good-the-heart-habits) and 12 secondary variables (8 of them describing the population and 4 the quality). Our intervention was made through health education talks, given by nurses. Before these talks the patient had to fill in a questionnaire and later after 90-120 days a telephone poll was carried out. The statistical analysis was made using SPSS application program for Windows, and the main variables were analysed with McNemar test.
Results: Including 200 patients, 189 questionnaires were analysed. We obtained statistically significant changes on diet (before a 46.6% were on diet and after a 91.5%; P<0,0001), exercise (before a 66.1% and after a 87.8, p<0,0001), blood pressure taking by the nurse (before a 83.6% and after a 95.8%, p<0,001), smoking habit (before 34.5% and after 8.0%, p<0,001), behaviour at chest pain (before right first action 17.6% and after 88.2%, p<0,0001). Changes in the blood test variable were not found (before 72.5% and after 71.4%).
Conclusions: Patients who were given health education about coronary artery disease, through talks given by nurses, keep up and adopt good-for-the-heart habits. Our next step will be to check that all these changes are due to our intervention and not to other factors, comparing these patients with those ones who were not given health education.
