Abstract

Transradial access for cardiac diagnostic and intervention procedures is well-established and has widespread use. The low rate of vascular complications and immediate deambulation allow early discharge. There is not evidence in the medical literature about the hemostasis times for 5F sheath with conventional compression bandage.
Objetive: The purpose of this study is to validate the radial hemostasis times with conventional bandage for the diagnostic catheterizations of 5F sheath.
Methods: prospective consecutive pilot study was performed from July 6th 2004 to September 9th 2004. A total of 144 patients were included after meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria. After the procedure, the patients were randomized in two groups for hemostasis of 60 minutes (Protocol 1) and 90 minutes (Protocol 2). The complications were evaluated during compression, after bandage change and before discharge.
Results: the mean age was 67.5 years old (33-89), with a mean BMI of 27 (17- 40.5) and 35 patients were women. The complications during compression were 11 bleedings in both groups (14.9% and 15.7% respectively). There were 3 haematomas (4.1%) in the “Protocol 1” and 4 in the “Protocol 2” group (5.7%). There were no statistical significant differences between the two groups. All complications were resolved before discharge and there were no severe haematomas.
Conclusions: the hemostasis times for 5F sheath for diagnostic procedures was determined for 60 minutes without increase in the rate of complications.
