36.05. Take care, my heart! A campaign for preventing cardiovascular risk factors and promoting education for health.

Abstract

Introduction: During 2002, 35% of the deaths occurred in our country were due to Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD). We consider that this contribution on CVD is important enough to develop a specific intervention program.
Aims/Objetives: To screening people with CVD antecedents and/or cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) in order to offer them the preventing and therapeutic interventions they may need.
1. To detect people with antecedents of cardiovascular diseases or with factors of cardiovascular risk, offering preventive and therapeutic interventions to them.
2. To aware the people about the importance and possibilities of prevention in CVD that, as opposed to other pathologies, are very easy to implement and highly const-effective.
Methods: We designed a descriptive study focussed in those people who were interested in the knowing about its cardiovascular health status (n: 427). To this purpose we accomplished a CVRF detection health survey including demographic data, life habits, personnel and familiar antecedents, anthropometrics data, blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol measurement in capillary blood samples.
Results: Overall, 37.7% of the screened individuals presented 1 CVRF, 24.3% presented two and 19% presented three, only 6% presented four CVRF. The most prevalent CVRF were high blood pressure (52.7%), overweight (50%), obesity (22.5%), hyperglycaemia (19.2%) and smoking (15.2%).
Conclusions:
1. It is remarkable the large amount of citizens who didn’t know which are the CVRF and, consequently, which they might have. In contrast, these people were very much interested in learning about the prevention strategies we might offer them.
2. We believe that these results reinforce the concept of nursing staff playing an important role in both CVRF prevention and education for health programs.
