Experience on the teaching of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to adolescents.

Abstract

Our expert team in the teaching of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), volunteering and School of Adult Education proposed the challenge of giving seminars of CPR to a group of adolescents. This was decided after considering the general population, the first Mobile ICU (intensive care unit) which introduced the CPR and having taken into account the need of training the population.
Our aim was to attain the correct training for adolescents studying Further Education in the steps to be taken during a basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This was carried out by means of theoretical and practical informal lectures. Moreover, the aim of the lectures was also to test their previous and subsequent knowledge of the subject.
Material and methods: A theoretical and practical lecture was given, performing resuscitation on dummies.
Sample: 75 people; Average age of 20; 60 women; 15 men.
Test: 75 tests prior to the training lecture; 75 tests subsequent to the theoretical and practical account.
Results: Emergency numbers. Previous test: 64% do not know them; 36% know them. Subsequent test: 100% know them.
Practical case of airway blockage. Previous test: 20% do not recognise it; 80% do recognise it. Subsequent test: 100% recognise it. Lateral Position. Previous test: 20% do not know how to do it: 20% do know how to do it. Subsequent test: 100% know how to do it. Ability to execute resuscitation measures. Previous test: 72% do not feel able to execute them; 28% feel able to execute them. Subsequent test: 80% feel able to execute them; 20% do not feel able to execute them. Meaning of ABC. Previous test: 84% do not know it. Subsequent test: 100% know it.
