Title Arrhythmias in the ambulatory continuous electrocardiogram of the aged
Abstract

Nowadays, the elderly represent a percentage of 17% of the population, and it will reach a 22,3% by the year 2026. The elderly are affected by a number of pathologies: osteoarticulatory, hypertension, cardiovascular, respiratory and diabetes. Arrhythmias are, thus, associated with the aging of cardiac tissue. The aim: to analise the incidence of arrhythmias and their handling among the elderly, the relationship between arrhythmias and symptoms and their reproduction in the holter monitor. Retrospective revision of 111 patients, 60 men, 64 hospitalized, between January 1999 and September 2001 through: medical history, basal electrocardiogram in relation with the monitoring of 24. The incidence of documented arrhythmias was 24.33%: faintness is the prevalent symptom, as has been found in other research, the correlation between the symptoms and the findings is low; positive findings in the holter monitor determine the therapeutical attitude and asymptomatic arrhythmias are relatively frequent.

Key words Aged, elderly, arrhythmia, faintness, holter monitor

Title Communication lists: The communication list of "Nursing in Cardiology"
Abstract

A communication list is a group of e-mail addresses through which messages can be sent to numerous people who make up the list. Thus, different common interest topics, information, etc. can be debated.  Communication lists in nursing are usually moderate. Title "Nursing in Cardiology" communication list. One year working
Abstract

"Nursing in Cardiology" list provides an answer to the interest of professionals from every field in cardiovascular nursing to debate and consult any topic in their field of work. It is a moderate, open and not restricted list.   In order to subscribe, it is enough with writing down your e-mail in our web page: http://www.enfermeriaencardiologia.com.   Our list was inaugurated on December 24th, 2000 and was aimed at being a meeting point of debate among professionals in nursing in cardiology. Its members are mainly Spanish speaking nurses.  The aim of this work is to show the result of the behaviour of this list in its first year of working.  Type of study: an interview to its members through the list, first with a general calling and second through individual messages.  Target population: nursing professionals, members of the list. Study variables: Age, sex, residence, field of work in cardiology. Statistical analysis: The data were processed with the SPSS database. Relative frequencies were calculated, expressed in %. Results: Level of participation: 43%. During the first two weeks, 20% answered spontaneously: 64% women, and only 11% were older than 50. The 50% of these answers came from Spain.

Title Implantable automatic cardioversor defibrillators (I.A.C.D.)
Abstract

I.A.C.D. is a recently created device (first implanted in 1980) and rarely known in infirmary. In this work we have tried to provide a general panorama of this topic, which is of great concern in general infirmery, as well as in cardiology. We are well aware of the respect that this new device produces on non-trained personnel or on the personnel that is little used to the handling of the patient carrying an I .A.C.D., particularly when the patient fibrillates and it comes into action, administering its programmed and therapeutical shock which may even «raise» the patient from bed. Moreover, if we are unable to see the device, because it is internal, if we do not know whether we can intervene or how to do it and, in addition, we do not know whether we ourselves will be affected by the shock if we touch the patient, all our concers are justified.  We will first describe those pathologies which make it necessary its implantation, as well as a brief summary of its short and recent history.

Key words

Defibrillator, fibrillation, implanted, tachycardia, battery, condenser, electrode, sudden death.
